ISCC - Fossil free plasticproduction

Through good and long-term relationships with our customers, we push the work of more sustainability forward - together.

In January 2020, Nordiska Plast launched a new series of plastic products partly produced from fossil-free raw materials.
The material is a certified sustainable biomaterial.

Food storage from Nordiska Plast contributes to reduced food waste and is made from raw materials in Polypropylene (PP). Approved for food contact and 100% recyclable.

The fossil-free food storage series (ECO) has the same product benefits as those made from traditional plastic materials. The difference is that the material is partly based on renewable raw materials (biomass) that do not compete with the food supply. Simply "A better lunch box!"

Simply explained, it can be said that the plastic material Polypropylene is manufactured with propylene gas as a raw material. This gas is traditionally produced as a by-product from petroleum, a non-renewable fossil resource. Today, a number of fossil-free material alternatives are also available on the market. These fall under the category of biomaterials. The raw material for the production of biomaterial can e.g. be starch from corn, sugar or cellulose and is called biomass.

Thanks to new methods and a more sustainable approach, technology has been developed to produce the gas from renewable raw materials. The material we buy comes from a certified manufacturer in Germany which in its production also uses recycled vegetable oil and oil from pine as raw material in their production. A renewable residual product from the food- and forest industry.

To ensure that the materials we purchase are manufactured under sustainable conditions, Nordiska Plast has chosen to certify 3rd parties in accordance with ISCC Plus. In this way, we guarantee that as much fossil-free plastic raw material is added to the market as we use in our fossil-free products. The principle is called mass balance and works in the same way as when you e.g. signs electricity contracts with renewable energy.

ISCC PLUS - What is that?

With ISCC certified material, we can, to name a few examples, trust that the biomass used in the production of the platsic raw material:
*Is made from fossil-free, bio-based, raw material (biomass) on a mass balance basis

*Does not compete with the food supply
*Counteracts deforestation / deforestation
*Does not come from land with high biodiversity and natural collagen
*Complies with human rights, labor and land rights
*Is economical throughout the supply chain. From cultivation to production of end product.
*Complies with laws and international treaties

In 2018, Nordiska Plast became the first plastic supplier in Scandinavia to be certified in accordance with the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification PLUS System (ISCC PLUS). We now offer consumers to take part in the latest innovation in biomaterials (renewable alternatives to fossil-based plastic materials).

We believe that even renewable raw materials, biomaterials, require credible proof of durability and Nordiska Plast therefore only uses certified materials from certified suppliers. The certified plastic raw material is produced from biomass from second-generation raw materials. This comes from Europe (Germany) and has been acquired in accordance with the criteria in ISCC PLUS. Which is a global certification system that covers all types of biomass production throughout the value chain.

ISCC ensures biomass production that meets environmental, climate and social requirements. You can read more about ISCC at http://www.iscc-system.org
